|
Four Searles Bullheads
players flew to Ft. Myers, Florida as members of the Minnesota HPK
Oilers to take part in the 22nd annual "Roy Hobbs World
Series". Dave Fauth, Bruce Gieseke, Bruce Jacobs, and Tom
Steinbach returned home "World Champions" as
their HPK Oilers team defeated Puerto Rico by a score of 6-4 in the
championship game played at Hammond Stadium on November 13th.
The Oilers cruised through the 53 team Masters (48+) AAAA (top)
division, going undefeated in eight games, and they
outscored their opponents 58-13 up to the championship game.
After four "pool play" wins the Oilers defeated Toronto,
Puerto Rico, and Detroit in the playoffs, and Puerto Rico kept winning
in double elimination to earn their championship game berth VS
Minnesota. That game ended in exciting fashion, as Puerto Rico
had 2 runners in scoring position with one out in the ninth inning.

The Minnesota Senior
Men's Amateur Baseball Association state champions for 2010 are
the Searles Bullheads. A pair of New Ulm natives were locked
in a pitcher's dual in Sunday's championship game as
Bullheads ace Terry Steinbach bested Slayton's Mike Wenninger by a
score of 1-0. Steinbach scattered nine Slayton
hits in the game, all singles. He walked only one while
striking out four, and his defense was stellar throughout the
contest.
Searles scored the
winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Dave Fauth
led off the inning with a slicing line drive to right center
field. Slayton's right fielder made a valiant diving attempt
to catch the hit, but was unable to cut it off. The ball
rolled to the wall and Fauth cruised into third base with a
triple, just the third hit off Wenninger. The Barnstormers
chose to issue intentional passes to both Tom and Terry Steinbach
to load the bases for Doug Ekstrom. Ekstrom worked the count
full, fouling off some good pitches, then drove a base hit to left
center to win the game for the Bullheads.
This was the fourth
state championship in the last six years for the Bullheads, but
this one was very special, as they entered the 2010 tournament as
the seventh seed. The Bullheads had always been one of the
top three seeds in each of their previous five state
tournament appearances.
The whole Bullheads
team would like to thank the Searles Baseball Association for
their hospitality, and their families and fans for their support
throughout the 2010 baseball season.

The Searles Bullheads
scored first and second round wins in the Minnesota Senior Men's
Amateur Baseball Association's state tournament over the weekend.
Union Hill was the sight of their Saturday night 7-0 win
over Perham, and on Sunday evening they defeated the
Menahga Relics by a score of 6-2 at Joe Schleper stadium in
Shakopee.
Terry Steinbach went
the distance on the mound in game one striking out six and
allowing just two Perham hits in the shut out victory. In
the second round win over Menahga, Kyle Messner fanned 14, walked
none, and gave up six relic's hits to earn the complete game
win.
The Bullheads scored
early in the win over Perham, plating one first inning run as
Messner and Doug Ekstrom singled to start the game and Mike
Marquardt drove in Messner with a sacrifice fly. Four runs
were added in the second on three walks, an infield error,
and a big bases clearing double off the bat of Scott Schaefer.
Dave Fauth walked to open the third, advanced on a Tom
Steinbach base hit, and scored run number six on a Marc Max
fielder's choice. The final insurance run was added in the
seventh when Fauth walked, Bruce Jacobs singled, and Terry
Steinbach drove in Fauth with a sacrifice fly.
After two scoreless
innings, Menahga scored first in Sunday's game by bunching three
hits off Messner to take a 1-0 third inning lead. However,
Searles bounced right back with three of their own in the bottom
of the inning with three consecutive hits off Relics' losing
pitcher Jim Burous. Messner, John Giefer, and Schaefer
singled, and an infield error on a Marquardt ground ball accounted
for the scoring. In the fourth, Terry Steinbach led off with
a walk and Jacobs came in to run for Steinbach. Ekstrom
followed with a single and both runners later advanced on a wild
pitch. Messner drove in Jacobs and Ekstrom to give the
Bullheads a 5-0 advantage. Giefer then singled and later scored
the sixth run as the shortstop mis-played another Marquardt ground
ball.
The Bullheads advance
to semi-final action at the Jordan Mini-Met on Saturday evening
August 28th as they play the Bloomington vs. Veseli winner at
7:00pm. A win there would put them back into the
championship game on Sunday at 7:30pm, also in Jordan.

2 (Exhibition)
|
|
|
The Searles Bullheads defeated the
Union Hill Pitbulls by a score of 3-2 Tuesday evening in Union
Hill in a non-conference 35+ game.
Leadoff hitter Kyle Messner sent the
second pitch of the game over the scoreboard in right field to
give Searles a 1-0 lead. That slim lead lasted for 6
innings, until Union Hill put together 4 consecutive hits and
scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth off eventual winning
pitcher Mike Marquardt. Tom Steinbach started on the mound
for Searles and threw three scoreless innings.
In the top of the seventh, Marc Max
led off with a walk. Following a sacrifice bunt by Tim
Steinbach, John Giefer and Todd Olson singled to load the bases.
And walks to Marquardt and Tom Steinbach forced in the tying and
winning runs.
Messner earned the pitching save by
allowing one harmless hit and striking out three in the bottom of
the inning.

Searles Bullheads
15 Belle Plaine Gray Tigers 1
|
|
|
Pitchers Dave Fauth
and Kevin Hulke were on their game, and the Bullhead's bats came
alive as Searles defeated Belle Plaine 15-1 in the final MSMABA
River Valley League contest of the season for both teams.
Fauth started on
the mound, allowing just 1 hit and fanning 3 Grey Tiger
hitters in three innings of work. Hulke threw the final two
frames of the run rule shortened game allowing three hits and an
earned run.
Ex-Gopher ace
starting pitcher Terry Knop was uncharacteristically wild as
Searles scored eight second inning runs to put the game away
early. Knop walked five, hit two, and allowed four singles
in the inning, two by Brian Sieve and one each by Mike Marquardt
and Scott Suprenant. The Bullheads added one run in the
third on a Kyle Messner walk, a base hit by Bruce Jacobs and
a Marquardt sacrifice fly. They then sealed the deal with a six
run fourth inning as Marc Max and Messner walked, Todd Olson and
Jacobs singled, and Marquardt clobbered a bases loaded double
to the fence in center field. Tom Steinbach followed
Marquardt with an RBI double, and Doug Ekstrom drove in Steinbach
for the final Bullhead run. Jacobs, Marquardt, Sieve, Olson
and Suprenant had two hit games and Marquardt drove in five of
the 15 Searles runs.
Searles ends the
conference season with a 10-5 record and Belle Plaine dropped to 6-9.
The Bullheads travel
to Union Hill Tuesday evening for an exhibition game before
starting play in the MSMABA state tournament Saturday August 21st.

Searles Bullheads
7 Veseli Vulcans 3
|
|
|
The Searles Bullheads
defeated the Veseli Vulcans Sunday by a score of 7-3 in Searles
The win secured a second place finish behind St. Peter in the
River Valley League's Southern Division with one game to go in the
regular season, and a higher MSMABA state tournament seeding for
the winners. Both Searles and Veseli entered the deciding
game with eight wins and five losses in conference play.
After winning pitcher
Terry Steinbach retired the Vulcans in order in the first inning,
the Bullheads plated a run in their half of the inning.
Kyle Messner led off with a base hit, and Todd Olson moved him
into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Following a
walk to Dave Fauth, Mike Marquardt singled in Messner to give them
the lead. Brian Sieve started a three run third
inning with a single, and after an Olson walk, John Giefer
singled, Dave Fauth doubled in a run, and Marquardt came through
once again with a two run single. Searles carried a four run
lead into the fourth until the extreme heat and humidity took it's
toll on Steinbach. He struggled through the inning allowing
three runs, two of which were earned, on two hits and three walks.
Those runs and hits were to be only ones for Veseli in the
contest. The Bullheads picked up a big run in the bottom of
the inning on a Terry Steinbach single, a Doug Eckstrom sacrifice
bunt, and another Sieve hit to give them a five to three lead.
After Tom Steinbach walked the bases loaded to open the fifth,
Messner came in to pitch for Searles. Messner proceeded to
strike out the next two Vulcan hitters and get the final out
on a grounder to third. He then sailed through the next two
innings fanning four more to close out the game. The
Bullheads added two more sixth inning insurance runs as both
Eckstrom and Tim Steinbach were hit by pitches, Bruce Gieseke and
Messner were walked to force in one run, and Olson drove in
another on a fielder's choice.
The last regular
season game for Searles will be played Thursday evening in Belle
Plaine. An exhibition game is being scheduled with Union
Hill the following week to prepare for the upcoming 32 team
state tournament which is held the final two weekends of
August in Jordan and other locations in that area.

Searles Bullheads
10 Faribault Flames 0
|
|
|
Pitcher Kyle Messner
fanned 11, walked none, and allowed just three harmless
singles as the visiting Searles Bullheads shut out the
Faribault Flames 10 -0 Saturday evening in a 5 inning game which
was shortened by the 10-run rule. Messner had a huge game
offensively as well, as he connected for four hits in the contest.
Tom Steinbach also had a big night at the plate, going two for
three and driving in three runs.
Messner began the game
with a double and later scored on a Steinbach base hit. Doug
Eckstrom drove in John Giefer with a bases loaded walk to give
Searles a 2-0 first inning lead. Messner again started a three
run fourth inning rally with a single. Walks to John Giefer
and Mike Marquardt loaded the bases. Following a wild
pitch that plated Messner, Dave Fauth and Steinbach drove
in two more runs with base hits. The Bullheads then put
the game out of reach in the top of the fifth as Bruce Gieseke
opened the inning with a base hit to center. Bruce Jacobs
reached on an error, setting the table for Messner's next at-bat.
He promptly doubled in Gieseke and sent Jacobs to third.
Back to back singles by Giefer and Marquardt scored
Jacobs and Messner. After a Flames' error scored Marquardt,
Steinbach drove in Fauth with the final Bullhead run on a
fielder's choice.
Terry Steinbach is
scheduled to pitch against Veseli in tomorrow's 4:00 game in
Searles. The Vulcans and Bullheads are tied for second place
in the River Valley League's Southern Division, and the outcome of
this game will have an impact on the upcoming MSMABA 32
team State Tournament seedings.

Le
Center Braves 8 Searles Bullheads 2
|
|
|
Veteran Brave's right
hander Lynn Schwarz had good control and kept the
Bullhead hitters off balance Friday evening in LeCenter to
earn the complete game 8-2 victory. He walked only one
Searles batter in the contest while striking out three. The
Braves jumped out to a three run first inning lead as losing
pitcher Kevin Hulke walked the lead off hitter, allowed 4 hits,
and hit one LeCenter batter in the inning. Hulke then
settled into a grove and threw three scoreless innings until
the fifth, when both he and reliever Dave Fauth allowed 4 more
runs on 4 hits and 2 walks.
In the top of the
fifth inning, it looked as if the Bullheads would start a
comeback as a John Giefer single drove in Troy Kamm to make it a
three to one game, but once again Schwarz was able to avoid
further damage by getting ball after ball hit directly at his
fielders who handled them flawlessly.
The final Searles run
was scored by Bruce Jacobs as he reached on an infield hit to lead
off the seventh inning and scored on a Giefer double, his third
hit of the game. Both teams collected 10 hits in the
contest, but the LeCenter hits were timely and were aided by the six
free-passes they received throughout the game.
Next action for the
Bullheads is Saturday evening as they travel to Fairbault.
They then host Veseli Sunday afternoon at 4:00 in Searles.

Searles Bullheads
5 St. Louis Park Cardinals 1
|
|
|
Pitchers Dave Fauth
and Kyle Messner combined to strike out 14 St. Louis Park hitters in
Sunday's MSMABA River Valley League baseball game in Searles.
Fauth allowed just two hits and one unearned run in his 4 innings
of work to earn the 5-1 victory. Messner threw three
innings of shutout ball striking out eight of the 10 batters he
faced to close out the contest.
Fauth started the
scoring for the Bullheads as he led off the second inning with a
long double to dead center field and following a Tom Steinbach
single, Todd Olson blooped a Texas leaguer into left to score
Fauth. In the Third, Messner drilled a one out double off
the ivy monster in right. Following a Mike Marquardt single, Messner
then scored on a wild pitch. Five straight singles off the
bats of Messner, John Giefer, Marquardt, Fauth, and Steinbach
produced two fifth inning runs, and after Marc Max and Doug
Eckstrom had singled in the sixth, Marquardt drove in Max with the
final Bullhead run. Searles collected 13 hits off
Cardinals' losing pitcher Steve Swenson in the game.
After road games in
LeCenter and Fairbault Friday and Saturday this week, Searles will
host division foe Veseli Sunday afternoon August 8th at
4:00pm in their final home game of the season.

5 Waconia Islanders 1

Terry Steinbach
carried a 1 hit shutout into the 7th inning of the Searles
Bullheads 5-1 victory in Waconia Friday evening over the
Islanders. Steinbach struck out 7 and walked only one in the
complete game win. The bottom of the 7th began with 3
straight hits which produced a run for Waconia, before Steinbach
was able to end the game on a strikeout and a come-backer to the
mound.
The Bullheads jumped
on Islanders' starter Shayne Marker for 3 quick runs in the 1st
inning with the aid of 2 walks. John Giefer, Dave Fauth,
and Tom Steinbach collected hits in the inning with Giefer's being
a double. Searles scored once in the 4th on 3 walks and
a Mike Marquardt single, and again in the 5th on 3 consecutive
hits by Bruce Gieseke, Doug Eckstrom, and Kyle Messner. The
Bullheads received 8 free passes in the game and out-hit the
Islanders 9-4.
Searles will host St.
Louis Park and Union Hill Sunday with game times scheduled

Lake Mariners 3 Searles Bullheads 0
|
|
|
Mariners ace
lefthander, former minor leaguer Mike Fier, struck out 9 and
walked just 1 en-route to a 3-0 shut-out of the Searles Bullheads
Sunday evening in Searles. The Bullheads actually out-hit
the Mariners 5-4 in the contest, but just couldn't get the big hit
when they needed it as the crafty lefty always seemed to thwart
any scoring threats.
With one out in the
first inning, Fier allowed 3 singles by John Giefer, Mike
Marquardt, and Tom Steinbach to load the bases for Searles.
He then proceeded to get back to back strikeouts to end the
inning, and the Bullheads weren't able to get a runner past 2nd
base the rest of the game.
All 3 Prior Lakes runners who scored, reached base via the
base-on-balls. Steinbach was Searles' tough-luck
losing pitcher going the first 6 innings, striking out 7, and
allowing 5 walks. Marquardt threw the final frame allowing just 1
base runner on an error.
Bullheads highlights were mostly defensive in the game, and those
kept the game close. Rightfielder Bruce Jacobs prevented the
4th Mariner's run from scoring by throwing out a base runner
at home to end the 4th inning. In the 5th inning, shortstop John
Giefer made a diving stab of a grounder up the middle, and with
the help of a brilliant barehanded turn at 2nd base by Doug
Eckstrom, executed a double-play. That play sent a
baserunner to third for Prior Lake, which catcher Myron Seidl
turned into an out as he fielded a wild pitch off the backstop and
caught the baserunner off third to end the 5th inning.
The Bullheads travel to Waconia for a Friday night game this week. They
then host St. Louis Park and Union Hill in a Sunday (Aug. 1st) double-header
beginning at 4:00PM

St.

|
|
|
Right fielder Matt
Bishop led off the bottom of the 6th inning with a single and
scored the winning run on a double play attempt to give the St.
Peter Saints a 2-1 victory over the Searles Bullheads Tuesday
evening in St. Peter. Saints starting and winning pitcher
Scott Zeiher and Bullheads ace lefthander Kevin Hulke were locked
up in a pitcher's duel from the start of the game, and Tom
Sterling earned the save by holding Searles scoreless in the
7th. Hulke suffered the tough complete game loss, allowing
just 6 singles and striking out 4.
St. Peter scored first
in the 3rd inning on a walk, a sacrifice bunt, and a base hit.
The Bullheads promptly answered back in the 4th on doubles by
Scott Schaefer and Tom Steinbach. That was to be all the
scoring until that 6th inning Saints rally.
Next action for the
Bullheads is Sunday as they travel to play Edina Braemar
and then back that direction again on Monday 7/19 evening to face
Shakopee in a game originally scheduled for Thursday 7/15.

Searles Bullheads
3 Slayton Barnstormers 3 (Tie-
Exhibition)
|
|
|
As per a mutual
agreement between the two teams, the Sunday July 11th game between
Searles and Slayton ended in a 3-3 tie. They had agreed that
no extra innings would be played if tied at the end of regulation,
and that's exactly what happened.
Mike Wendinger threw
the 7 inning complete game for the Barnstormers allowing 11 hits
and striking out 9. The Bullhead's Tom Steinbach
started on the mound and was relieved by Kyle Messner for the
final 3 innings.
Slayton scored twice
in the 1st inning off Steinbach on 4 hits and a walk, and once in
the 4th on two hit batters and a single. Messner fanned 6 in
his 3 innings of scoreless work for Searles.
Searles scored all of
their runs in the 3rd inning on consecutive hits by John Giefer,
Scott Schaefer, Dave Fauth, Mike Marquardt, and Steinbach.
The Bullheads travel
to St. Peter for a 7:30 contest vs the Saints Tuesday evening.

Searles Bullheads
8 New Hope Bandits 2
|
|
|
After a 2 1/2 week
layoff due to the late June storms, and Independence Day break,
the Searles Bullheads shook off a sluggish 1st inning and came
back to defeat the New Hope Bandits 8-2 Saturday evening.
Starting pitcher
Dave Fauth gave up a lead-off single to Bandits 2nd baseman Doug
Hartwig to begin the game. After a fly-out, 3 walks
forced in one run, and 3rd baseman Shawn Harding followed
with run producing single for a 2-0 Bandits lead. The stage
was then set for the first of several defensive gems turned in by
the Bullheads. Searles 3rd baseman Marc Max back-handed
a hot-shot ground ball down the line which sent him well into foul
territory beyond the bag at 3rd. He came back across the bag
to force the 2nd out, and threw a strike to first to nip the
runner and end the Bandit's threat with a double play. Fauth
then seemed to settle into a groove, and with the help of an errorless
defense, breezed through 5 more innings allowing just 2 harmless
singles and 1 walk. Kyle Messner closed out the game
throwing a scoreless 7th inning.
The Searles offense
answered the Bandits 2 run first with a 3 run first of their own,
and took control of the game right away. John Giefer
connected for a 1 out single (the first of 5 hits in the game for
Giefer, and 16 in the game for Searles) to begin the rally, and
following a Scott Schaefer walk, Fauth, Mike Marquardt, and Brian
Sieve each hit RBI singles. 2 more runs crossed
the plate in the second, and again Giefer, Fauth, Marquardt, and
Sieve collected the run producing hits. Marquardt drove in
Messner and Bruce Gieseke for another pair of Bullhead runs in the
5th making the score 7-2 and giving him a 4/4 - 4 RBI performance
on the day. The final run came in the 6th as Max, Gieseke,
and Giefer singled, and Schaefer walked to drive in the
run.Messner and Bruce Jacobs each made hit robbing catches in the
outfield to squelch any New Hope rallies, and the game ended on a
brilliant double play turned by Gieseke at 2nd as the baserunner
was barreling into him.
The 5-1(5-0 conference
play) Bullheads hope to avenge their only defeat of the young
season as they host Slayton Sunday afternoon at 2:30 in a
non-conference battle. They then travel to St. Peter Tuesday
evening for a big conference showdown for 1st place in MSMABA
division play.

Searles Bullheads
3 Lonsdale Jokers 1
|
|
|
Kevin Hulke threw a
complete game masterpiece at the Lonsdale Jokers Wednesday evening
in Lonsdale. He artfully painted the corners at crucial times
to escape jams and win the pitcher's duel with Joker ace Steve
Ceplecha by a score of 3-1. Hulke gave up 2 singles and a
double to the 1st three Jokers hitters, but escaped with only
one run scoring as 2 pop-ups and a strikeout followed. It was
the first of seven K's in the game for the crafty lefty. Hulke
allowed just 6 hits and no free-passes in the contest, keeping the
hitters off-balance all evening.
The
Bullheads scored on consecutive singles by Doug Eckstrom, John
Giefer, and Tom Steinbach to lead off the 3rd inning. Marc
Max's 2-out single drove in the 2nd run. Bruce Jacobs scored a
big insurance run in the 4th as he walked, went to 2nd when
Giefer was hit by a Ceplecha pitch, took third on a ball that
bounced away from the catcher, and scored on a Steinbach infield
hit. Max and Steinbach each had two hits to lead the 8-hit Searles
attack.
Lonsdale is a first
year MSMABA team with an average age of just 36-37 years old and a
very promising future in the league.
The Bullheads
travel to Loretto Saturday June 26th to play the Miesville Groupers
and the Minnetonka Lakers in their annual "Fishbowl"
tournament with games at 1:30 and 4:00.

Searles Bullheads
8 Northfield Millers 0
|
|
|
Pitchers Tom Steinbach,
Myron Seidl, and Kyle Messner shut out the Northfield Millers 8-0
on Sunday evening. The hometown Millers led off the 4th and
5th innings with hits, but those were the only hits they would get
off this trio of Bullheads hurlers.
Searles scored a run
in the 1st inning without the benefit of a hit as Marc Max, who
had reached on a fielder's choice, scored on a wild pitch.
Two runs were scored in the 2nd on a pair of walks by Bruce
Gieseke and Al Felber followed by a Messner base hit, and
then Bruce Jacobs scored on a steal of third and a wild throw
by the catcher.
In the 4th inning the
Bullheads put the game out of reach by scoring 5 times.
Gieseke led off with another walk, Messner was hit by a
pitch from Millers losing pitcher John Noack, and then 4
consecutive singles by Messner, Max, Sterinbach, and Mike
Marquardt, and a bases loaded walk to Brian Sieve plated the 5
runs. All 12 Bullheads hits were singles in the contest, and
Doug Eckstrom, Messner, Max, Steinbach, and Sieve all had 2-hit
games.
The Bullheads travel
to Lonsdale Wed. June 23rd for their next MSMABA league game.

Tom Steinbach struck
out 18 Wildkats hitters in a complete game 4 hit shut
out of Webster Sunday night in MSMABA conference play. The
Bullheads offense struck early in the contest scoring 5 first
inning runs. A Marc Max one out single started the rally for
Searles. Back to back walks to Steinbach and Mike Marquardt
followed, and Brian Sieve drove in one with a single.
Following a Doug Eckstrom RBI fielder's choice, Al Felber plated 2

Felber scored on a wild pitch.
The Bullheads plated
one in the 4th on a Kyle Messner hit-by pitch, a stolen base and a

Wildkats pitchers walked 5 in the inning. Searles capped off

Searles Bullheads
6 Eden Prairie Lion's Tap 4
|
|
|
The Searles
Bullheads squeaked by Eden Prairie Lions Tap Friday evening in
Gaylord by a score of 6-4 in 9 innings. Searles starting
pitcher Kyle Messner carried a 3-1 lead into the 6th inning,
but Eden Prairie struck for 3 in the bottom of the inning off
reliever Kevin Hulke to take a 4-3 lead. A clutch 2 out
double by Mike Marquardt scored Scott Schaefer in the top of the
7th to tie the game for the Bullheads, and Tom Steinbach came in
to pitch in the bottom of the inning. Steinbach walked the
lead-off hitter, and following a stolen base and a wild pitch, the
potential winning run stood at 3rd base with no outs. He
then proceeded to wiggle out of the jam by striking out 2 and
getting a weak foul pop-up to end the Eden Prairie threat and send
the game into extra innings.
Marquardt and Brian Sieve drove in a pair of 9th inning runs for
Searles, and Steinbach worked out of a bases loaded situation in
the bottom of the 9th to earn the pitching win. 7
Bullheads hitters had multi-hit games, but they stranded 16
runners on base in the contest.
The Bullheads
travel to Webster next Sunday, June 13th, to begin a busy 4 game
week which includes the "Twins Night" game at Fairfax on
Monday the 14th at 7:30PM.

victory.
Bullhead's losing pitcher Hulke

close for Searles.
The game featured excellent pitching
as well as great defense as neither team committed an error
