Prior Lake Mariners 11 Waconia Islanders 3

The Mariners were quick to start the scoring in the bottom of the first as lead off hitter Joe Schultz reached on a misplayed ball in the outfield. With one out, John McCaustlin doubled to left putting runners on 2nd and 3rd setting the stage for Chris Rooney who drove both home wit a bloop single to center. Scott Rohne singled home Rooney to give the Mariners a 3 – 0 lead after one inning.

In the second, with 2 out Andy Schmidt singled bringing up lead off hitter Joe Schultz. With Schmidt breaking for 2nd on the first pitch, Schultz executed a perfect hit and run driving a single through the vacated 2nd base position sending Schmidt to 3rd. Joel Schmitz and McCaustlin walked to load the bases and once again Rooney delivered a single to score two runs. Mike Fier then singled home two more to give the Mariners a formidable 7 – 0 lead.

Mariner catcher Mike McCallion led off the third inning with a booming home run over the left field fence to extend the lead to 8 – 0. The Mariners threatened again in the 4th only to strand 3 runners as Waconia pitcher Kirk Vergin struck out the side.

Waconia took advantage of 4 walks, a wild pitch and a hit batsman and a lone hit in the top of the 5th to score 2 runs. A well executed throw from right by Andy Schmidt cut down a third run at the plate.

The Mariners added 3 more runs in their half of the fifth, led by a long single to left by Kevin McDonald, followed by 4 walks, a sacrifice fly by Andy Schmidt and a misplayed ball by Waconia.

Shakopee Chiefs 3      Prior Lake Mariners 2
Shakopee took advantage of 4 walks and singles by Reed Boltman and Tim Holzhuter to plate 3 runs in the top of the second. Mariner pitcher Mike Fier then went on to retire 14 of the next 16 Shakopee batters.

Mariner catcher, Mike McCallion led off the 6th with a single, only to be erased at second on a fielder's choice play initiated by Mariner shortstop Joel Schmitz. Tim Hanson reached on an error moving Jeff Carlson, running for Schmitz to third. Carlson scored on an infield out by Scott Rohne narrowing the margin to 3 - 1 in favor of the Chiefs.

In the seventh, pinch hitter Jim Manfred popped to the first baseman and catcher Kevin McDonald flew out to left. With two out, Mariner first baseman Jeff Carlson delivered a single. Chris Rooney drove Carlson home with a long double to the gap in left. Fier followed with a sinking liner to left that had the potential to score Rooney with the tying run, but the Mariner hopes were dashed by a spectacular diving catch made by Shakopee left fielder, Reed Boltman to preserve a 3 -2 Chiefs victory.

St. Peter Saints 5     Prior Lake Mariners 0
The St. Peter Saints maintained their winning ways Sunday with a 5 - 0 win over the Mariners at St. Peters Veteran's Field..   "Walks will Haunt" is an old baseball adage and it proved true for the Mariners as 6 Saints gained free passes in the first 3 innings of play. Prior Lake missed a key double play ground ball in the third that opened the door to 3 runs being scored. Jeff Greenbush showed signs of brilliance with good velocity and an excellent curve ball, but had trouble with his command. Tim Hanson relieved and closed the door on further scoring and Mark Schroeder pitched a scoreless 6th for the Mariners

Once again, the bats were relatively quiet as the Mariners were able to scratch out only 5 scattered hits and never able to mount a serious threat. Norm Kintzle led off the third with a double to the gap in right, but was stranded at second. Chris Rooney, playing in his first game of the season,  "one-hopped" the center field fence in the top of the seventh for a ground rule double, but once again was left at second as the Mariners dropped to 2 -2 in the MSMABA Blue Division.

Prior Lake is at home on Thursday night as the St. Louis Park Cardinals make their maiden visit to the Vet in Prior Lake. Game time is set for 8:00 pm.

Belle Plaine Gray Tigers 2     Prior Lake Mariners 1
The Mariners dropped a tough one on Thursday night in Belle Plaine by a score of 2 - 1.

Once again, the bats were on the quiet side. However, Jim Manfred pitched a great game striking out 10 and walking only one while surrendering just 4 hits.

The Mariners managed 3 hits, one a double down the left field line by left hand hitting Mike Fier in the top of the seventh to set the stage for a comeback try. Jay Jendersee and Mike McCalion followed with walks to load the bases with one out, but the rally fell short.

From a positive standpoint, the Mariners made no errors and the pitching was tight.
