Hanska Bullheads 9   Prior Lake Mariners 1
Right hander Kyle Messner gave the Hanska Bullheads a stellar pitching performance when they needed it most Saturday night in Belle Plaine, as he overpowered the Prior Lake Mariners in the MSMABA state tournament AA semi-final game.  Messner had assumed the role of "closer" all season for Hanska, earning many saves, and usually throwing only an inning or two per game in relief.  But on this night, he was asked to start the game in place of Terry Steinbach who was nursing an injured knee.  After allowing a lead-off homerun on his 2nd pitch of the game, Messner fanned 16 and scattered 5 other hits the rest of the way to earn the complete game 9-1 victory.  He also executed 2 other put-outs in the contest, which left only 3 ground ball outs which were recorded by the rest of the defense.
The Bullheads scored in the top of the 1st inning on an error and base hits by Dave Fauth and Tom Steinbach.  The game remained tied until the 4th when Mike Marquardt lead off with a solo homerun. Later in the inning,  with 2 outs and the bases loaded, Terry Steinbach deposited a pitch over the left field wall for a grand-slam giving Hanska a comfortable 7-1 lead.  A Marquardt double followed by a Brian Sieve single plated run #8 later that same inning, and the final run was produced on base hits by Todd Olson and Fauth in the 5th.
The state championship game will be played Sunday in Jordan at 7:30 PM.  The Bullheads will face St. Peter in a re-match of the 2008 title game,as the Saints defeated Shakopee in Saturday's other AA semi-final game.  Hanska has won the state title 3 of the last 4 seasons including back-to-back titles in 2007 and 2008.

The Hanska Bullheads sent 11 hitters to the plate scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, and then cruised to a 14-0 five inning win over Eden Prairie Lions Tap in the 2nd round of the MSMABA state tournament Sunday evening in Union Hill.
Todd Olson, John Giefer, and Dave Fauth had 2 hit games for Hanska to lead the offensive explosion.  Fauth led off the 2nd inning with a solo homerun to make the score 7-0.  After scoring 3 in the 3rd on a couple of walks, an error, and a Brian Sieve double, Giefer capped off the scoring with a 4th inning grand slam homer.
Fauth was the winning pitcher, going 4 innings and allowing just 2 hits.  Kyle Messner threw the final frame allowing a hit and striking out 2 in the 10-run rule shortened contest.
The Bullheads advance to Saturday's  7:00 PM semi-final game in Belle Plaine vs. the 4th seeded Prior Lake Mudhens.  Prior Lake defeated #5 Edina Braemar Sunday to advance to semi-final play.  The AA finals will then be played on Sunday August 30th.

Hanska Bullheads 5   Jordan Millers 1
The Hanska Bullheads downed the visiting Jordan Millers Sunday evening by a score of 5-1 to win the 10 team Blue Division of the MSMABA River Valley Conference with a record of 13-2.  Hanska needed the victory to insure the championship, as 2nd place St. Peter (with only 3 losses) was breathing down their necks.
Winning pitcher Terry Steinbach struck out 8 and scattered 6 hits over 6 innings, and Kyle Messner closed the door by striking out the side in the 7th for the Bullheads.  Steinbach and Millers' pitcher Troy Mahoney had a 0-0 pitcher's duel going until the bottom of the 4th when Mike Marquardt led off the inning by reaching first on a throwing error.  Bruce Jacobs entered the game to run for Marquardt as he was injured on the play.  Terry Steinbach then doubled off the batter's eye in centerfield sending Jacobs to 3rd.  Tom Steinbach sent a pop-up down the leftfield line and the tagging Jacobs scored on the unbalanced throw home by the shortstop.  Hanska then added 4 runs in the 5th inning as Dean Brinkman led off with a walk.  Two runs were plated on consecutive hits by Messner, John Giefer, Dave Fauth, and Jacobs.  With the bases loaded, Terry Steinbach walked to force in run #4 and Tom Steinbach drove in the 5th run with his 2nd hit of the contest.  Messner, Giefer, Todd Olson, and Tom Steinbach each had 2 hit games for the Bullheads.  Jordan's centerfielder Brian Schroeder drove a Steinbach pitch over the leftfield fence in the 6th inning to account for the only Millers score of the evening.
The Bullheads will host the Union Hill Pit-bulls in a exhibition game Sunday Aug.16th at 3:00 PM, as they prepare to defend their 2008 MSMABA state championship.  The tournament will be held over the last 2 weekends of August in Jordan, Belle Plaine and Union Hill.

Prior Lake Mariners 3    Hanska Bullheads 0
The Prior Lake Mariners defeated the Hanska Bullheads 3-0 Sunday afternoon in Prior Lake.  Whenever the Hanska hitters seemed to have a rally going, Mariners' winning pitcher Jim Manfred was able to get a ground ball or line drive hit right at his defense for the big out.  The game even ended that way.  With the bases loaded and 2 out, Tom Steinbach smashed a line drive to Mariners 3rd baseman Joe Schutz.  A few feet higher or down the line, and the game would have been tied at 3-3.
Kevin Hulke was the tough luck losing pitcher for Hanska.  He threw the complete game, allowing just 2 earned runs on 5 hits.  The Bullheads actually out hit Prior Lake 8-5 with Brian Sieve going 3 for 3 and Hulke 2 for 3 in the contest.
With the loss, Hanska now drops to 11-2 in the MSMABA River Valley Conference and 13-5 over-all.  They travel to New Hope next Sunday, for another Conference matchup with the Bandits at 3:00 PM.

Hanska Bullheads 4     Union Hill Pitbulls   2
Dave Fauth led the Hanska Bullheads to a 4-2 victory Friday evening in Union Hill.  Fauth and Pitbulls pitcher Dave Hagene were locked up in a pitching duel early in the contest and Union Hill took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning without the benefit of a hit.
A hit batter, a walk, and a fielder's choice scored the run off Fauth.  The Bullheads came back though in the 5th, scoring all 4 of their runs.  Al Felber walked to lead off the inning, Bruce Jacobs followed with a sacrifice bunt, and Kyle Messner reached on an error.    After a pop-up for the 2nd out of the inning, Mike Marquardt walked to load the bases.  Fauth then sent a bases clearing double to the fence in left-center field.  Tom Steinbach then drove in Fauth with a double to the right-center gap for Hanska's final tally.
Over his 6 innings of work Fauth allowed just 3 singles.  He struck out 4, walked 4, and hit one Union Hill batter.  Messner recorded the save on the mound, throwing a scoreless 7th inning, he also collected 2 of the 4 Bullhead hits on the evening.

Hanska Bullheads 4     Waconia Islanders  1
The Hanska Bullheads got back on track with a 4-1 home victory over the Waconia Islanders Sunday evening, giving them a MSMABA River Valley Conference leading 10-1 record.  The Bullheads got all the runs they would need in the 1st inning, as Kyle Messner and John Giefer led off the game with back to back singles.  Mike Marquardt executed a perfect sacrifice bunt moving the runners into scoring position, and Dave Fauth promptly delivered a 2 run single.  Dan Erdman later scored Fauth with the 4th single of the inning.  Hanska scored an insurance run in the 5th on a walk to Giefer, a Marquardt double, and a Tom Steinbach single to center.  Fauth was also the winning pitcher, throwing 6 strong innings.  He allowed just 2 hits and struck out 7 Islander hitters in the contest.  Messner worked the final frame fanning 2.

Shakopee Chiefs 7    Hanska Bullheads 5
On the strength of good pitching, excellent defense, and some timely hitting, the Shakopee Chiefs overcame a 3 run Hanska 1st inning to defeat the Bullheads 7-5 Sunday evening.  After a Kyle Messner lead-off base hit, Mike Marquardt, Dave Fauth, and Terry Steinbach singled ahead of a Tom Steinbach  1 out double to account for the 3 runs.  Shakopee pitcher Brad VanBerger then scattered just 6 more hits and got some help from his defense to hold the Bullheads to single runs in the 4th and 7th innings.  A 7th inning rally fell short for Hanska as a game tying homerun bid off the bat of Marquardt was pulled in with a leaping grab off the fence at the 353-foot marker by the Chiefs' center fielder.  Marquardt, Fauth, and Tom Steinbach led the offence with multi-hit games, and Fauth and Terry Steinbach each threw 3 innings for the Bullheads.  Steinbach was the losing pitcher as Shakopee scored 3 to tie the game in the 2nd inning, and 4 in the 4th for the win.

After a couple of non-conference losses Saturday in their annual "Fishbowl Tournament" the Hanska Bullheads bounced back to shutout the Northfield Millers 4-0 in Dundas on Sunday to up their Conference leading record to 9-0.  The Minnetonka Lakers won Saturday's tournament opener 7-6 over the Bullheads.  The Miesville Groupers then bested Minnetonka 6-0 in game two, and Hanska 6-3 in the finale to take home the winning trophy.
In Sunday's win over Northfield, Dave Fauth and Kyle Messner combined to pitch a no-hitter.  In 6 innings of work, Fauth fanned 11 and walked just 1.  Messner struck out 2 to close out the game for Hanska.  The Bullheads did all their scoring early in the contest.  With 2 out in the 1st, John Giefer drilled a single to left.  Fauth followed with a double into the right-center gap, and Tom Steinbach drove in Giefer with a base hit.  A Doug Ekstrom double brought in Fauth for the 2nd run of the inning, and Steinbach scored on an errant throw by the catcher..  Consecutive base hits from Bruce Gieseke, Bruce Jacobs, Messner, and Todd Olson accounted for the final Hanska tally in the 2nd.

Hanska Bullheads 4     St. Peter Saints 2
Following a thrilling come from behind 4-3 extra inning win over Bloomington on Saturday, the Hanska Bullheads picked up a couple more hard fought home field victories on Sunday June 21st.
A Tom Steinbach 3rd inning grand slam home run accounted for all the Bullhead runs in a 4-2 win over the St. Peter Saints in a 1:00PM River Valley Conference game.  The Steinbach blast followed walks to John Giefer and Dave Fauth, and a Mike Marquardt hit-by-pitch.  Fauth earned the win on the mound going 6 innings, scattering seven hits, and striking out 7.  Kyle Messner picked up the save, fanning 3 hitters in the final frame.
After Slayton defeated St. Peter 15-0 in the 3:00PM contest, Hanska and Slayton got together for a non-conference game in the nightcap.  Messner, the winning pitcher, not only threw a complete game 4 hit victory, but provided most of the offense for Hanska as well.  Trailing 1-0 with one out in the 4th inning, Steinbach grounded a base hit to left.  Following a Brian Sieve sacrifice bunt, Al Felber and Bruce Jacobs walked to load the bases.  Messner then connected for a 2 out bases-clearing double giving the Bullheads and Messner all the runs they would need for the win.  Another insurance run was added in the 6th on a Felber hit, a couple of walks, and a throwing error by the catcher as his throw caromed off the runner's helmet.  The Slayton line-up included 2 former area high school players: Mike Wenninger and Terry Boelter.  They are a new team for 2009 and are an at-large team in the MSMABA this season.
On Saturday June 27th,  Hanska will host the second annual "Fish Bowl" tournament.  The Bullheads will play 10:30 and 3:30 games, and their opponents, the Miesville Groupers and Minnetonka Lakers will get together for a 1:30 contest.  The tournament site rotates locations each year, and was played at Miesville in 2008.

Hanska Bullheads 4     Bloomington Eagles 3 (8 innings)
For 6 innings, Bloomington right-hander Scott McNalley and his Eagle defense frustrated the Bullheads' hitters Saturday afternoon in Hanska.  Until the bottom of the 7th inning, McNalley seemed to wiggle out of every jam with a big strikeout or one of the 3 double plays turned by his infield.  Tom Steinbach's lead-off homer in the 7th seemed to ignite the Bullhead offense, as they then added 2 more runs in the inning to tie the Eagles in regulation.  Brian Sieve followed Steinbach's homer with a single, and Scott Suprenaunt cracked a double (his 3rd hit of the game) sending Sieve to 3rd.  Eagle third baseman Scott Kloiber then robbed Bruce Jacobs of a base hit with a diving stop in the hole and a perfect throw to first as Sieve scampered home with the Bullheads 2nd run.  After a pop-up out to the catcher, Myron Seidl sent a deep fly ball into the left field corner for a big two out double, scoring the tying run.  Mike Marquardt and Steinbach started the winning 8th inning rally with back to back base hits, and Sieve ended it with a sacrifice fly scoring the sliding Marquardt on a close play at home.  Winning pitcher Kevin Hulke went the distance for Hanska allowing just 2 earned runs, scattering 11 hits, and striking out 8 Eagle hitters.

Hanska Bullheads 6     Belle Plaine Gray Tigers  0
The Belle Plaine Gray Tigers became the 4th consecutive shutout victim of the Hanska Bulheads Sunday evening June 14th as Hanska's starting pitcher Tom Steinbach threw a 2 hit / 6 strikeout gem over 6 innings of work to earn the 6-0 win.  Closer, Kyle Messner fanned 2 and allowed 1 hit in the final frame.  The game began with a misplayed grounder off the bat of lead-off hitter Todd Olson.  Gray Tiger pitcher Terry Knopp then walked Messner and Mike Marquardt to load the bases for Dave Fauth.  Fauth promptly doubled in 2 runs and Dan Erdman drove in the 3rd run on an infield error.  Knopp was then able to silence the Bullhead bats until the 6th inning when Bruce Jacobs led off with a single.  Messner followed with a single and Marquardt again walked to set the table for Fauth once again.  Another Fauth hit netted 2 more RBIs, and Erdman drove in the final Hanska run with his 2nd base hit of the game.
The Bullheads are now 6-0 in MSMABA River Valley Conference play and 7-1 over-all.  They will host Bloomington at Hanlin field on Saturday June 20th in a 2:00 PM contest.  St. Peter and Slayton  will then be Hanska's guest opponents on Sunday the 21st. at 1:00 and 5:00, and will play each other at 3:00 PM.
