The Loons managed two runs in the third and made them stand up for a Class B Championship victory.  They took advantage of an error, and bunched two walks with two singles to score their two runs. 

The Brave’s lone run game in the first when Johnny Martinez walked and scored on a hit-and-run double by Lynn Schwarz. 

The Braves had their chances with runners on base in all but one inning.  In the third the locals loaded the bases but a double play ended the rally.  They stranded nine base runners on the day. 

Joel Terrio got the five hit complete game win.  Lynn Schwarz took the loss hurling 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing six hits, with four walks and one strikeout.  Ken Schmidt came on for 1/3 inning of relief.

The Braves backed a superb complete game pitching performance by Chuck Squires with solid defense in the Class B semi-final win.  Squires allowed just one hit, an RBI single in the third inning, while issuing two free passes and fanning nine. 

The local nine jumped on the Alers early.   In the first inning, Chad Anderson walked, went to third on a pitcher’s throwing error, and scored on Troy Clement’s RBI single.  Steve Biehn followed with a single and Squires plated Clement with an RBI single. 

In the second, Russ Ehlers walked, Johnny Martinez reached on an infield error, Anderson followed with an RBI single, Clement walked, Biehn singled home Martinez and Anderson.

The Braves came back on day two with enough offense, better defense and a nice pitching performance by Lynn Schwarz.  He got the complete game shutout allowing just three hits, walking two and fanning five. 

In the fist inning Johnny Martinez took one for the team, moved to second as Chad Anderson reached on an infield error, went to third on a Schwarz ground out and scored on a wild pitch. 

Tim Palmquist led off the second with a single, moved to second on Paul Factor’s sacrifice, advanced to third when Jim Becker’s fly ball was mishandled and scored on a single by Russ Ehlers. 

Ehlers doubled in the fourth and scored on a Martinez single. 

Looking for an insurance run in the fifth Chuck Squires singled and moved to second on an infield out.  Factor singled up the middle but Squires was cut down at the plate on a great throw by the Bomber’s centerfielder Nylan.    

The Braves now advance to semi-final play in Class B facing the Jordan Alers on Saturday at Union Hill at 7:30 pm.  Saturday’s outcome will determine whether the Braves play Brainerd or Montgomery on Sunday at Jordan at either noon or 5pm.

State tournament play opened at Jordan with the Braves meeting the Bloomington Eagles. The Eagles put a big crooked number 7 on the board in the second inning, combining four hits, two errors and a hit batter.  Lack of offense and six fielding miscues were the local’s downfall.

The Braves responded with three in the third.  Ken Schmidt walked, Paul Factor singled, Jim Becker tripled both home and scored on Tim Palmquist’s infield grounder. 

In the sixth, Lynn Schwarz singled, stole second and scored on a Troy Clements single.  Chad Anderson walked and after advancing on a wild pitch both scored on infield groundouts by Steve and Rick Biehn. 

Schmidt went 4 2/3 on the hill allowing nine hits, two hit batters and two strikeouts.  Rick Biehn tossed 1 1/3 innings of relief with one free pass. 

Rocky Koop silenced the Brave’s bats to just four hits and stuck out six.

Webster put up five runs in the first inning but the Braves kept chipping away and came away with a road win. 

Rick Biehn toed the rubber allowing eleven hits with a walk and eight strikeouts.  Curt Boltman was sneaky quick for the Rookies with eleven strikeouts. 

Johnny Martinez led off the game with a walk, stole second, and after two were out Troy Clement reached on an error scoring Martinez and Chuck Squires ripped an RBI double. 

The fourth produced a five spot as Clement tripled, Martin Martinez walked, Jim Becker doubled, Rob Blaschko walked, Johnny Martinez doubled, Tim Palmquist reached on an error and Lynn Schwarz singled. 

Three insurance runs in the fifth saw Squires walk and singles by Martin Martinez, Blaschko and Johnny Martinez.

A game that took two nights, almost three weeks apart, to complete had quite a story line and extra-inning ending.  A see-saw affair that was suspended in the middle of the fourth inning on July 17th, with the Braves leading 4-3, more than kept everyone’s interest. 

The Braves responded to two Saint’s runs in the top of the fifth with two of their own.  Lynn Schwarz singled, Ken Schmidt reached on an error, and both scored on singles by Martin Martinez and Jim Becker. 

The Saints tied it in the sixth and took a one run lead in the eighth.  In the Brave’s eighth after two were out, Johnny Martinez singled and scored on a clutch hit-and-run double by Troy Clement. 

Still tied in the ninth, consecutive singles by Schmidt, Paul Factor and the game winner by Chad Anderson brought home the walk off win. 

Schmidt got the complete game win scattering ten hits.  Eric Wilner, Keith Bense and Jeff Knutson combined on the Saint’s pitching duties.

An exciting game with a key double play and several plays at the plate resulted in a Braves victory.  The Loons stranded the tying runs in scoring position at game’s end. 

After the Loons broke the ice with a run in the top of the fourth, the Braves responded with four of their own.  Troy Clement doubled, Martin Martinez singled, Jim Becker reached on a fielder’s choice, Brent Christian singled and Johnny Martinez singled. 

In the sixth, Grant Anderson walked, and with two out Tim Palmquist doubled and Lynn Schwarz singled. 

Schwarz had a solid outing on the hill going five innings, allowing four runs on five hits, with two walks and a strikeout.  Ken Schmidt relieved in the sixth with a tie score and the defense came up with a big double play to snuff the Loon rally.

The Braves led 5-4 after three and 7-6 after five before wildness and six errors let this one get away. 

In the first, Ken Schmidt singled, Johnny Martinez walked, Jim Becker doubled and Paul Factor tripled. 

In the third, Steve Biehn singled, Schmidt reached on a fielder’s choice, Martinez single home  Biehn and Becker’s fielder’s choice plated Schmidt. 

In the fourth, Brent Christian singled, Russ Ehlers singled, Biehn singled home Christian and Martinez singled home Ehlers. 

In the seventh, Factor doubled and later scored as Christian reached on a fielder’s choice. 

Le Center native, Jerry Anderson pitched the final three frames for Veseli racking up sixth strikeouts.  Rick Biehn, Martinez and Schmidt shared the Brave pitching duties.

The Brave’s could muster only a lone run in the sixth when Chuck Squires doubled and scored on a Troy Clement single.

Steve Biehn took the hill and held the potent Bullheads in check allowing just five hits. 

Myron Seidl scattered eight Brave hits.

The Braves scored six in the second as Jr. Tish walked, Jim Becker singled, Johnny Martinez, Martin Martinez and Tim Palmquist each walked, Lynn Schwarz and Ken Schmidt both singled. 

In the third, Paul Factor singled, stole second and scored on an infield error. 

In the sixth, Martin Martinez singled, Palmquist walked, Schwarz singled, stole second and scored two ground outs later. 

Johnny Martinez made his first start as a hurler and got the win.  Rick Biehn threw a solid two innings of relief.

Free passes in the first and errors in the sixth contributed to big innings for the Robins in their 9–3 victory.  

Jr. Tish started on the mound and had location problems allowing four runs.  Lynn Schwarz relieved with one out in the first and orchestrated a timely 1-2-3 double play.  He did finish the game on the hill. 

The Braves pushed across three in the 6th when Chuck Squires was hit by a pitch, Schwarz reached on an error, Tim Palmquist singled and went to third on an outfield error.  Russ Ehlers followed with an RBI single to plate Palmquist.

Out hit twelve to four the Braves dropped a lop-sided game at south division leading Union Hill.  Steve Biehn led the local iron-nine offense with two singles.

Persistence paid off as the Braves put up three big runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead for good.  In that inning, Steve Biehn led off with a single, Johnny Martinez singled, Lynn Schwarz singled home Biehn, Troy Clement was hit by a pitch as was Ken Schmidt, and Junior Tish walked to account for the three runs. 

Two runs were manufactured in the fourth as Chuck Squires singled, after a fielder’s choice Tim Palmquist and Russ Ehlers were both walked and Jim Becker came through with a clutch two out, two RBI single. 

Schmidt got the complete game win allowing seven hits, with no walks while fanning three Loons.  The Brave defense sparkled with only one miscue.

The Braves offense never got going against the left handed slants of Saints hurler Keith Bense.  He had twelve strikeouts and allowed only five hits.  Johnny Martinez led the offense with two singles. 

Rick Biehn toed the rubber for the Braves allowing nine hits, with five walks and no strikeouts.  The Brave defense looked better with only two errors.

The Braves were out hit twelve to two, identical to the score. 

The Brave’s two runs came in the first when with two out Ken Schmidt reached on a strikeout and catcher’s throwing error, Troy Clement reached on an infield error, Jim Becker reached on an infield error, and Martin Martinez had a two RBI single. 

Leading 3-2, the division leading Bullheads broke the game open in the third.  After two infield errors, a single, a double and a homerun by Brian Sieve tallied five big runs. 

Schmidt pitching the first 5 2/3 was tagged for twelve runs, eleven hits, walking none and fanning two.  Steve Biehn finished the sixth inning. 

Bullhead righty Dean Brinkman and lefthander Kevin Hulke brought some serious heat and fanned 12 Brave hitters.

The Braves had to put up a couple of crooked numbers late in the game to pull out their first  win of the season.  

Rick Biehn was on the mound and held the Rookies to four runs on nine hits, with one walk and fanning seven. 

The locals tallied their first run in the third when Troy Clements singled and scored on a Lynn Schwarz double. 

In the fifth Clements walked, Schwarz reached on an error, Chuck Squires had an RBI double and Steve Biehn an RBI single. 

The Braves took the lead in the sixth as Johnny Martinez singled, Clements singled, Squires singled and Steve Biehn singled.

The Veseli Vulcans out played the Braves in every statistical category and came away with the 8 – 1 win.  

The Braves’ lone run came in the first inning as Tim Palmquist singled, Jr. Tish walked, Lynn Schwarz walked and Chuck Squires scored Palmquist on an infield ground out. 

Rick “Hoyt Niekro” Biehn went five innings allowing eight runs on six hits, walking five and fanning one.  Steve Biehn tossed a scoreless sixth allowing two hits

The Braves took an early lead in the first when Johnny Martinez singled, Lynn Schwarz singled, and after a wild pitch Chuck Squires came through with a sacrifice fly to plate Martinez.  The locals could muster only two more hits the rest of the way.  

The Pitbulls broke the game open in the fifth using three hits and an error to produce three runs. 

Dave Hagene and Jim Weiers shared the Pitbull mound duties allowing four hits, four walks and fanning seven. 

Ken Schmidt tossed the first six innings for the Braves allowing five runs on seven hits, two walks, two hit by pitch with one strikeout.  Rick Biehn pitched a perfect seventh inning in relief.

The Robins used five hits to take advantage of four errors and three walks to lead ten to nothing after two innings.  Lynn Schwarz, Jr. Tish and Rick Biehn shared the mound duties for the Braves.  They collectively allowed nine hits while striking out four and walking six. 

The Braves clawed back in the later innings to eventually drop a 12 – 8 decision. 

In the third Tish walked, Johnny Martinez reached on an error, Tim Palmquist walked and Schwarz reached on a fielder’s choice to score Tish. 

In the fifth, Martinez singled, Jim Becker reached on an error scoring Martinez, Tim Palmquist walked, and Becker scored on a wild pitch. 

The sixth brought four runs as Paul Factor reached on an error, Tish singled, Martinez singled, Becker and Palmquist got free passes, and Schwarz singled to plate the last two runs.

The Le Center Braves  began a new season and a new era last week at Jordan.  Rule changes including the return of wood bats and seven innings with three outs. 

The fourth inning was the difference as the Alers capitalized on three errors and a walk to plate five unearned runs.  Brian Feltmann added a solo home run in the fifth. 

Ken Schmidt toed the rubber for the Braves allowing three hits and three walks while fanning two.  Joel Reed got the complete game win allowing five hits, with three walks and ten strike outs for the Alers. 

In the Brave fourth, Johnny Martinez singled, stole second, Steve Biehn walked and Russ Ehlers had an RBI single. 

Martinez tallied a second run in the sixth with another single, stole second and scored on a Jim Becker single.
