2003 Game Highlights

LeCenter Braves

The Braves will now play Saturday, Aug 23, at Jordan versus the Edina Greys     (13-9 winners over Jordan Alers) in a Class C semi-final game at 2 pm.  The other semi-final will pit the Urbank Goldtimers (5-4 win over Montgomery Loons) against the Morris Legends (7-0 victors against Webster Rookies) 

A victory will result in a Sunday, Aug 24,  I pm game at Belle Plaine for the Class “C” Championship.  A loss would result in a 1 pm third place game at Union Hill.

The Braves plated four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and hung on for the Class C quarter-final win at a very warm Union Hill field.  In that inning Bruce Frey singled, Rick Biehn singled, Randy Biehn walked, Chad Anderson worked an RBI walk, Jack Frey hit an RBI ground out, Tim Palmquist reached on an infield error, and Ken Schmidt singled. 

In the second, Anderson, Jack Frey and Palmquist all walked, Schmidt hit an RBI sac fly and Jr. Tish had an RBI single. 

The Braves added one in the fourth on an Anderson single and Palmquist double.

In the sixth inning Bruce Frey doubled and scored as Rick Biehn reached on an error. 

The Chargers scored three in the first, two in the sixth and two in the ninth to make things fairly tense. 

Randy Biehn started on the hill, going the first seven innings.  Steve Biehn came in relief to pitch the eighth and ninth for the win.

The Braves couldn't deliver the timely hits stranding fifteen base runners in the muggy Mini-Met at Jordan. 

Bruce Frey took the complete game loss, allowing just seven hits while  fanning two and walking none.  The  Bombers bunched four consecutive hits in the second inning to push across their three runs. 

The Braves struck early scoring two in the first inning when Rick Biehn led off with a single, Randy Biehn reached on an infield error, Chad Anderson walked to load the bases, after two outs Tim Palmquist singled home a run and Ken Schmidt walked to force in the second run.

The cardiac Braves plated four runs in both the eighth and ninth innings for a big come from behind win.   

Ken Schmidt tossed the first seven innings yielding eight runs, allowing 13 hits, fanning two with one free pass.  Steve Biehn got the win with two innings of one hit relief, allowing one run, one walk with two strikeouts.

For the Tigers, Lambrecht cruised through seven innings allowing just two runs on three hits.  Jeff Fogarty was roughed up for eight runs and six hits, taking the loss in relief.  

The Braves scored two in the second when Chad Anderson reached on a fielder’s choice, Tim Palmquist tripled and scored when Jr. Tish reached on an infield error. 

They added four in the eighth when Randy Biehn singled, Jack Frey singled, Anderson and Palmquist walked, and Rob Blaschko had a bases clearing single. 

After the Tigers had added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, the locals came back once more.  Rick Biehn singled, Steve Biehn walked, after two were out, Frey walked, Anderson had an infield single and Palmquist cleared the bases with his second triple of the game.

Montgomery’s Joel Terrio and the local’s Randy Biehn locked horns in a pitcher’s dual.  Terrio allowed only four hits and two walks while fanning six.  Biehn scattered nine hits with six stikeouts and one free pass.   The difference in the game was the locals ability to capitalize on a Loon error by bunching two consecutive hits and playing flawless defense. 

The Brave’s lone run came in the fifth when Ken Schmidt reached on an infield throwing error, Chuck Squires singled, Biehn walked and Tim Palmquist delivered a line drive RBI single to rightfield.

Squires continued the hot bat with three singles in three trips to the plate

The game was the perfect example of a costly error or a timely hit having a big impact.  The Saints jumped out early scoring one in the first, three in the fourth, one in the fifth and an important one in the ninth. The Brave’s late rally fell short. 

The locals first run came in the third when Tim Palmquist walked, Randy Biehn singled and Jr. Tish singled. 

The Braves plated two in the eighth as Jack Frey walked and Chad Anderson, Tim Palmquist and Randy Biehn followed with consecutive singles. 

Chuck Squires led off the ninth with a home run, Ken Schmidt walked and after an error scored on an Anderson single. 

Bruce Frey pitched well and deserved better but was not helped with those five errors and he tired.  Schmidt threw one pitch in relief for the final out.

Five Brave errors aided the Pit Bull’s twelve hits in their win.  Randy Biehn toed the rubber and took the loss, allowing no walks and fanning one. 

The locals lone run came in the second when Ken Schmidt walked, Jack Frey reached on an error, and Tim Palmquist delivered an RBI single.

The league leading Robins (15-1) showed their youth and strength in a lopsided victory.  Bruce Frey and Steve Biehn shared the mound duties during their fifteen hit attack. 

The put up their crooked number in the fifth when Ken Schmidt singled, Jack Frey singled, Bruce Frey doubled, Tim Palmquist singled and reach second on an outfield error.

The Eagles took home a win in the rain-shortened five-inning contest.  Ken Schmidt took the loss allowing five hits, walking two and fanning one. 

The Brave’s lone run came in the first as Rick Biehn singled, moved to second when Steve Biehn reached on an error, moved to third on a fielder’s choice and Jack Frey singled him home.

The Braves put together fifteen hits to support a strong pitching performance by Randy Biehn.   He allowed just one unearned run on five hits, walking three with twelve strikeouts.  The contest was shorted to eight innings due to the ten run rule. 

The locals plated six in the third, when Willy Walters reached on an infield error, Bruce Frey singled, Rick Biehn singled, Steve Biehn walked,  Ken Schmidt walked, Jack Frey and Randy Biehn both followed with doubles.

They added one in the fourth when Walters walked, Jim Becker forced Willy on a fielder’s choice and later scored on singles by Rick Biehn and Steve Biehn.  

Three runs were added in the seventh on a Darren Ely single, Steve Biehn walk, Grant Anderson single, and Jack Frey double. 

The scoring was completed with four in the eighth.  Tim Palmquist doubled, Jr Tish reached on an error, Chad Anderson walked, Becker reached on a fielder’s choice, Ely singled, Grant Anderson reached on a fielder’s choice and Jack Frey singled. 

Jack led the fifteen hit attack going four for five, with two doubles and five RBI.

The Vulcans scored early and held on in a tight ballgame.   Bruce Frey was on the mound fanning three and issuing six free passes. 

The Braves got on the board in the third when Frey reached on an error and scored on Willy Walters single. 

In the fourth, Rick Biehn singled, Ken Schmidt reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on Steve Biehn’s double.

The story line was a combination of the Brave’s lack of timely hitting while the Islanders delivered thirteen hits.  Waconia left town with the victory.  Randy Biehn took the loss issuing two walks and fanning four. 

In the second, Jack Frey walked, went to second when Jr. Tish singled and scored on a Tim Palmquist single.  

In the fifth, Palmquist walked, Bruce Frey reached on an infeld error and scored when Jim Becker doubled.

A game full of woulda, coulda, shouldas, for both teams was decided in the ninth inning. 

The Braves scored in the first as the result of consecutive singles by Rick Biehn, Steve Biehn and Junior Tish.  They added a two spot in the sixth combining four walks with a Jim Becker single. 

In the eighth, Darren Ely reached on an infield error, Rob Blaschko doubled and Rick Biehn brought in Ely with a sac fly.  The locals tied the score in the top of nine as Grant Anderson singled, Bruce Frey pinch ran, Tim Palmquist walked, Greg Poulton reached on an infield error, and Ely got a free pass to force in Frey. 

In the bottom of nine the Alers combined an infield error, a single and a fielder’s choice advanced the runners.  With two out, following an intentional walk to load the bases the winning run scored on an infield hit.

Steve Biehn toed the rubber in his first start.  After conceding a first inning home run, he  pitched very well until tiring in the seventh.  Ken Schmidt came in to relieve with two outs in the seventh inning and took the loss.

Montgomery Loons  3 Braves 2 (14 Innings)

The Braves scored two runs in the fourth when Rick Biehn walked, Bruce Frey singled, Jack Frey singled home Rick and Bruce scored on a wild pitch.

Bruce Frey had a strong performance on the mound with a one hitter going into the ninth.  The Loons strung several hits to plate two runs in the bottom of the ninth.  The action continued scoreless until the bottom of the fourteenth when the Loons produced the game winner.

The Braves put up a three spot in the fourth inning and hung on for a 3-2 win over the visiting Chiefs.  In that frame Junior Tish singled and after two outs Ken Schmidt singled, Jack Frey walked, Randy Biehn had an RBI walk, and Tim Palmquist had a two RBI single. 

The visitors picked up an un-earned run in the first inning.  They sandwiched two singles around an infield error in the seventh for their other score. 

Randy Biehn pitched well and got the complete game win, spacing six hits and allowing just one free pass. 

Up next, a road test at the undefeated (9-0) New Prague Robins on Wednesday at 7:30.

Braves 3 Veseli Vulcans 1 (10 Innings)

The Braves scratched across a run in the bottom of the tenth inning to take home a 2-1 decision on Friday.  Junior Tish led off the frame with a free pass and was sacrificed to second by Grant Anderson.  Tish moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a misplayed grounder to third off the bat of Rick Biehn. 

The locals got their initial run in the first as Biehn walked, Jack Frey singled and Randy Biehn doubled to score his older brother Rick.  The Vulcans knotted the scored in the top of the second on a single and two infield errors. 

Bruce Frey, now 2-0, got the complete game victory allowing five hits while walking and fanning two batters.  Two key defensive plays saw Vulcan baserunners thrown out at third base.

In  a fast paced contest Ron Hill dominated the locals allowing just one hit by Rob Blaschko while fanning eight. 

Ken Schmidt toed the rubber for the Braves allowing the potent Saints seven hits and one earned run.

The Lion’s Tap gave the locals the long ball treatment with three home runs on their way to a ten to nothing shutout. 

Randy Biehn started on the hill and tossed seven innings with Rick Biehn pitching the final  two frames. 

The Braves couldn’t get a key hit to do some damage.  They did have six hits, two each by Randy Biehn and Ken Schmidt but left 10 runners stranded.

The Braves scored two in the first, one in the second, three in the third and held on for a six to five victory.  Jack Frey led the eight hit attack with two singles and six other players had one hit each. 

Bruce Frey made his first mound start and got the win.  Rick Biehn came on in the   eighth inning to get the save.

The Pit Bulls broke open a 4-1 game with six runs in the sixth inning.  Jim Budin led the Bulls with two home runs and a double, three runs scored and four RBI. 

The Braves got their only run in the second when Randy Biehn walked, Greg Poulton singled, and Tim Palmquist walked to load the bases.  Biehn then scored on a wild pitch. 

The locals had just 3 hits, one each by Steve Biehn, Poulton and Randy Biehn but left 9 runners stranded. 

Ken Schmidt took the hill, took the loss and went  five and a fraction with Tim Palmquist making his mound debut and closing out the contest.
